Darwin is the capital of Australia’s Northern Territory and is an entry point for many planning on visiting Kakadu and Litchfield national parks in the surrounding vicinity. Those in town for a couple of nights will find that Darwin is a fantastic getaway destination with a holiday vibe any day of the week.
While in town relax at the waterfront precinct. The wave pool is popular with those looking to ride the swell and theres also a saltwater lagoon with plenty of cafes in the area to chill out at and grab a coffee.
The Mindil beach sunset markets are a must do and are on Thursdays and Sundays April to October. Grab something to eat from one of the stalls and sit on the beach to marvel at one of the most spectacular sunsets you’re sure to see.
Darwin is popular among adventurers and explorers and it’s easy to see why. On Mitchell street you will find Crocosaurus cove where you can get up close with crocs and other wildlife. Thrill seekers can opt for the cage of death experience. Be immersed into a tank with a massive crocodile in a with a see through cage the only barrier between.
If being in the water with crocodiles isn’t your thing but you want to get up close then check out the spectacular jumping crocs cruise on the Adelaide river.
The most popular reason to visit Darwin is to head to the popular Kakadu and Litchfield national parks. Visit the swimming holes, waterfalls and magnetic termite mounds of Litchfield national park on a one day tour. A day out that will be full of the right amount of adventure but also relaxation.
Kakadu national park is doable on a one day tour as well but to get the most out of it we recommend a 3 day 2 night tour to visit all the best attractions.
This area of the Northern territory has it’s wettest months November to March when areas are susceptible to flooding. Alot of the national park attractions are closed at this time of year so the best time to visit is between April to October. Visiting mid May or a little later will ensure that the tracks to Gunlom and Twin falls will be open to visit. These are two truly spectacular waterfalls in Kakadu that you won’t forget.
