Coral Bay Ecotours respectfully recognises the Baiyungu people of the Yamatji language group as the area’s original inhabitants and thanks them for their ongoing cooperation in enabling all of us to understand and enjoy the Ningaloo Reef region.
The Baiyungu, Yinikurtira, and Thalanyji people’s traditional land and marine country includes the Ningaloo Coast. They’ve lived there for more than 35,000 years. The area is very important because it has indigenous sites including fish traps, middens, and burial grounds. It also contains Australia’s earliest documentation of the utilisation of maritime resources. The native Yinigudura tribe gave the name Ningaloo, which means “deepwater.”
