Description

A one-hour wild life tour is available from Bruce Belcher’s Daintree River Cruises. Second, Bruce’s staff is an avid bird watcher with a keen eye for crocodiles and tree snakes. We spot crocodiles on 98% of our tours, especially during the cooler months. However, because the natural bird population in the Daintree is numerous, we do not provide Daintree bird viewing tours.

Departures

  • Departs 2856 Mossman Daintree Road, lower Daintree
  • On the banks of the Daintree River

We run Daintree trips from our remote wildlife boutique resort on the banks of the Daintree River. Relax in our garden lounge, listen to the animals, and enjoy a complimentary Daintree tea or coffee before or after your Daintree river trips. But you can wander through our lush tropical garden to our private jetty, where you can join our vessel for a personal guided trip with Bruce’s 32 years of Daintree River knowledge.

Highlights

  • Meeting Bruce Belcher and the team on your Daintree Discovery Tour
  • Above all, experienced Local Guides
  • Located at a private boutique location, away from the tourist crowds
  • Nature walk to private jetty in a Conservation Park
  • Small, personalised groups make for a more memorable experience
  • We provide good-quality binoculars for instance, the Pentax 8×40 for our one-hour cruises
  • Enjoy our delicious Daintree Tea and freshly brewed coffee

Important info before travel

  • Operates in all weather conditions; please dress appropriately
  • Camera
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Our boats are covered, but we still recommend bringing a hat,
  • sunscreen, and sunglasses.
  • Sling/Capsule for Infants: Prams are not allowed on the boats.

Q. “When is the best time to view wildlife?”

Throughout the cooler months (June, July, August, and September), our crocodile sighting success rate reaches an impressive 98%. However, during the warmer months, particularly in the crocodile breeding season and our wet season, this rate drops to approximately 50/50. While low tide can enhance the chances, it’s important to note that we never guarantee wildlife sightings, and crocodiles are still observed even at high tide.

Q: “Do your boats deter crocodiles?”

A: No, this is a misleading marketing claim circulating along the Daintree River. Crocodiles are habitual creatures and have become highly accustomed to the presence of our boats. However, newly arrived crocodiles in the river, unfamiliar with boats—any boats, not just ours—may initially be more elusive. With time spent in the Daintree River, they gradually become familiar with the regular boat activity, including ours, and their behavior adjusts accordingly.

Q: “Is it harder to encounter crocodiles and other wildlife during the summer?”

A: Yes, similar to humans, wildlife is also affected by the heat. However, the unpredictability of sightings remains, and you won’t know what you might observe until you experience it. December, January, and February mark our hottest months and coincide with the wet season. If you plan to travel during these months, it’s advisable to familiarize yourself with the prevailing seasonal conditions.

Q: “Do we have a chance to spot crocodiles in the rain?”

A: Crocodiles are indifferent to precipitation. Every tour in the warmer months is unique, and the outcomes are unpredictable until you experience it. In contrast, during winter, when there are fewer factors influencing crocodile sightings, the success rate is at its peak, reaching around 98%.

Q: “Can you assure us of seeing crocodiles or guarantee crocodile sightings?”

A: As a wildlife operator, we are influenced by numerous variables beyond our control. Bruce Belcher’s Daintree River Cruises takes place in the wild, and crocodile sightings cannot be guaranteed. However, with a history dating back to 1987 and over 40,000 tours conducted, our crocodile success rate has consistently been 98%, especially during the cooler months. In the event that you do not spot a crocodile, we are pleased to offer a complimentary return ticket. While low tide can enhance the chances, sightings are also possible at high tide.

Q: “Will I experience wet conditions on the boat?”

A: In the event of rain and windy weather, rain may blow in sideways. Additionally, there is a 200-meter walk to the boats that is not covered.

Our vessels are equipped with clear screen awnings that the guide can pull down during heavy torrential rain; however, this is done sparingly as the screens may limit visibility.

If you intend to travel during these months, it’s recommended to acquaint yourself with the prevailing seasonal conditions.

Q. “Does the crocodile breeding season and nesting season affect sightings of them?”

Answer. Yes, although through this time of the year October to the middle of March you may be lucky to see males fighting, crocodiles courting, mating and hatchlings.

Q. “Do you feed the crocodiles?”

Answer. No… Feeding crocodiles in the wild including other wildlife is illegal in Queensland.

Q. “Do I get a refund if I do not see a crocodile?”

Answer. No. In cases where customers do not see a crocodile, we will give you a return complimentary tour.

Q. “Where is the best seat?”

Answer. Preferably one in the boat.

Q. “Can I reserve a window seat for the best sightings?”

Answer. Every seat in the boat is a window seat with the best sightings, so you won’t be disappointed if you board last in the group.

Q. “Are birds and other wildlife besides crocodiles viewed on the tour?”

Answer. Yes, our tours focus on flora and fauna with an emphasis on the estuarine crocodiles, history of the area is also included. If you are a keen birdwatcher please note that our boats do have roofs, if this is not sufficient then we do have recommendations.

Q. “Will I get wet on the boat?”

Q. “Do the tours operate in the Rain?”

Answer. Yes, and customers should dress weather appropriate and check the weather forecast on date of travel.
