Launceston is a city in the north of Tasmania along the Tamar river. It’s home to one of the two main airports in Tasmania with the other being Hobart. This make it a great place to start your journey of this amazing rugged landscape under down under!
Being one of Australia’s oldest cities, Launceston’s Victorian and colonial architecture are well preserved. It’s a pleasant place to walk around to enjoy the scenery. Only a short walk from the centre of the city is Cataract Gorge – a slice of wilderness in the city centre.
There are many art galleries, design studios and museums that you can visit including the Queen Victoria Museum and art gallery.
Those that love fresh produce can follow the Tamar river north to explore. Visit the farms, fields and wineries of the Tamar valley and sample all the local delicacies.
Those that fancy themselves a beer connoisseur can visit the famous Boags brewery. The brewery here was established in 1883, sample one of Australia’s best beers – Boags Premium.
Only a short drive west of Launceston is the famous Cradle Mountain. Here you can hike the beautiful landscape to epic peaks and get amazing views. With any luck you’ll see plenty of wildlife on the way including wombats! If you’re short of time why not take a one day tour?
Heading east from Launceston you can visit amazing places such as the bay of fires, Bicheno and Freycinet national park.
