Description

The Rum Runner 2-day, 1-night dive tour from Cairns is a motor sailing schooner measuring 66 feet. The boat was built in 1984 and has a remarkably durable fibreglass hull. Rum Runner can seat up to 16 passengers in twin and four-share cabins. The berths in each cabin are set up single bunk style, as is typical for anyone familiar with sailboats, so the cabins are not particularly spacious or private.

Departing selected Monday’s and Thursday’s (weather dependent), we arrive at the outer reefs (Thetford, Briggs, or Moore Reefs) for up to 3 different snorkeling and diving sites. We love these reefs the best due to their amazing coral coverage and fish life. Visibility ranges from 10m to over 20 m, depending on the weather and tides, with maximum depths from 1m to 24m.

Departures

  • Check in Marlin Marina 7 am Cairns
  • Please note that there is a mandatory government reef levy to be paid onboard on the day of your trip. THERE IS A $40 REEF LEVY (PER PERSON) PAYABLE ONBOARD ($20 per person per day.)
  • Total tour cost $520

Day 1

Rum Runner passengers should arrive at the company office (Rum Runner, Marlin Marina, E-finger, Berth 3) by 7 a.m. for a 7.30 a.m. departure.

Arrive at Thetford Reef at 11 a.m. 4 dives and snorkelling trips
The dive instructor will go over general dive safety and the first dive spot with everyone. Diving will be suited to specific skill levels. If somebody is feeling rusty, one of the crew members will accompany them. On their first dive, if they so desire. If needed, guided dives can be arranged.

It’s time for some of the world’s best diving and snorkelling; sites include The Labyrinth, the Lagoon, Hurricane Bay, and Coral Gardens, from shallow coral gardens to lonely pinnacles to tunnels, swim-throughs, and stunning cliffs.
Dinner is served while you watch the sun set behind Cairns over the mountains.
During the evening, guests can unwind, enjoy a few social beverages, and get to know one another as the qualified divers prepare for the night dive. Evenings are low-key affairs, with simply a few drinks and a talk on deck while at anchor in the calm water of the company’s secured night moorings. The stars over the Great Barrier Reef are an amazing sight in clear weather.

Day 2

On the second day, two dives and snorkeling sessions are on offer. Firstly, an invigorating morning dive and snorkel, before a hearty breakfast, sees the start of a day of diving and exploring. The last dive includes swim-through’s and caverns, then a quick lunch break before heading off before noon. Now, before departing the reef for a sail to the tropical city of Cairns,. Finish the trip with a couple of drinks, going over the photos and videos with your fellow divers and snorkelers.

The Rum Runner 2-day dive tour from Cairns is amazing value, and you do get your money’s worth on this trip.

Rum Runner will accommodate up to 16 guests in multi-share twin single bunk areas, semi-private twin single bunk cabins, and a 4-share single bunk cabin. She is the equivalent of a multi-share hostel, just on water.

As is typical with sailboats, the cabins are not spacious or very private; they are for resting and sleeping. The common areas include an open saloon area and galley inside, as well as both covered and open outside deck areas.

We have USB, 12V DC, and 240V AC for charging cameras and phones, and a separate male and female toilet and shower cabinet with hot water.

She is by no means a luxury yacht. She is a practical working dive boat. Those seeking pure sailing, privacy, and luxury must consider elsewhere. Rum Runner is a great opportunity to meet other divers and guests from around Australia and the world and have fun with the crew doing it.
