The world famous Exmouth Navy Pier has been voted as one of the top 10 dive sites in Australia, and one of the top shore dives in world
The 300m long pier is situated just 14kms from Exmouth. It is still an active Navy Pier, and can be used from time to time by Navy ships for servicing the Naval base, it is therefore not accessible to the general public and must be dived through a licensed company.
Dive Ningaloo currently hold the licence for operating scuba diving tours at the Navy Pier. So please get in touch for more information. Dives are completely dependant on tidal movements and therefore either single dives or double dives are possible during slack water depending on the moon phase.
Restricting access to the pier and no fishing allowed, means that underneath the structure it is teeming with marine life, often described as being like an oasis in the desert, the marine life gravitates to the structure for protection. As a result the biodiversity for a small area is incredible. Divers enter the water from a platform on the pier itself via a giant stride.
The dive has a maximum depth of 15m and currents around the area are very strong meaning it can only be dived during slack tide. As a result, dive times vary from day to day, but the currents add to the rich variety of marine life found here.
The Navy Pier is a photographer’s dream as it boasts a huge variety of marine life to delight every type of diver, those who love big impressive sights, and those who love the small stuff. The pier structure is a macro wonderland.
Nudibranches of all shape and colour, flat worms, scorpion fish, frog fish moray eel, toad fish, shrimp and octopus fill every nook and cranny. Cruising through the shadowy structure are also big schools of snapper, rabbit fish and fusiliers, huge grouper, sea snakes and sharks, commonly grey nurse, reef and wobbegongs.
The structure is covered with soft corals and sponges that utilise the currents to feed and this attracts colourful reef fish, butterfly, angel, moorish idol and parrotfish.
