Hobart is the capital of Tasmania and a great place to start your journey on the southern most Australian State. From here you can start a trip of the east or west coast or do a whole lap of “Tassie”. While in town there’s also plenty to check out as well ;).
While in Hobart make sure you checkout the city centre and surrounds. If in town on the weekend be sure to visit the Salamanca market 8:30am to around 2pm on a Saturday. There’s fresh produce, clothing, crafts and all sorts of things on sale from around 300 stalls.
You may notice Mt Wellington in the background while in Hobart. It’s definitely worth heading up to the top for spectacular views of the city and it’s surrounds. A popular choice is to do the “Mt Wellington Descent” on a mountain bike.
A trip to Hobart isn’t complete without visiting Mona art gallery to explore it’s many interesting exhibitions. The Hobart museum and art gallery are also worth checking out too!
If you’re thirsty there’s plenty of locally made tipples in town to try. The Cascade brewery is the oldest running brewery in Australia (running since 1824!). In town the lark distillery serves up some of the finest scotch in the southern hemisphere.
Popular day trips from Hobart include Bruny island and Port Arthur. Bruny island will see you cheese tasting and exploring the rugged landscape while Port Arthur is the most complete world heritage Australian convict site with lots of history.
When it’s time to explore the rest of Tasmania there’s a couple of options available to you. If you’re short on time you can check out the 3 day 2 night west coast trip. Highlights include Russell falls, Mt Field national park, the Tarkine Rainforest and of course hiking Cradle Mountain.
If the east coast beckons you then the 4 day 3 night tour might be your flavour. Those with more time can opt for the 6 day 5 night tour which does the lap of tassie and includes the east coast. Launceston, the bay of fires, Bicheno blow hole and it’s resident penguins, Freycinet national park and wineglass bay are just some of the highlights that await you.
