Tasmania is Australia’s most southern state. It’s not attached to the mainland and is home to amazing wildlife, gorgeous national parks and epic scenery. There is plenty to do on this island “under down under” and to make the most of it we recommend a 5 to 10 day visit.

Getting here

If travelling by car and you want to take it with you then you want to book the Spirit of Tasmania Ferry. The overnight sailing is the best option as you can sleep during travel and wake up at your destination. Flying to Tasmania and then renting a vehicle there or hopping on a tour is going to be much cheaper. Hobart is the main airport to fly into though Launceston airport is another option.

What can I see and do?

Starting out in Hobart you can explore the city and checkout the sights. Head up the top of Mt Wellington for epic views of the surrounds. A visit to Hobart isn’t complete without a trip to Mona – the Museum of old and new art. Catch the ferry across and checkout the awesome exhibitions on show.

There are a couple of worthwhile day trips from Hobart as well. Bruny island is a great day trip to checkout and will have you exploring the island and trying fresh local produce. Port Arthur is another popular day-trip to visit the world heritage listed historic site.

Depending on how much time you have you may just want to visit the west or east sides of the island. If you’ve got 5-7 days at least then you can embark on a “lap of tassie”. This gets you to the best spots and allows you to really take in what Tassie has to offer.

The west side

Heading west from Hobart you’ll find Mt Field national park. Home to some of the worlds largest eucalyptus forests enjoy walks, viewpoints and waterfalls including Russell falls.  Lake St Clair is a bit further west and is Australia’s deepest lake and part of the iconic Overland track. A 6 day walk that finishes at the lake’s edge.

Moving on from there you can visit the small town of Strahan and the Henty Sand dunes. These epic sand dunes are a sight to behold and fun to run up and down. It won’t be long before you come to Cradle Mountain National Park. This is also part of the overland track and has great hikes, viewpoints and wildlife spotting.

Launceston is a good midpoint on your lap to stop and see Tassie’s second largest city. We recommend a tour of the James Boags brewery.

The east side

The east side of Tasmania also has amazing national parks but in addition amazing beaches. The bay of fires in the north east are aptly named after the bright orange rocks you’ll find scattered on the beach. Bicheno is a short drive south and is famous for it’s blowhole and little penguin viewing (so cute!) .

A short drive south from there and you’ll come across Freycinet national park. Amazing walks to epic lookouts await. Of course we recommend visiting wineglass bay. You can take the track to the lookout over the bay and then trek to the bay itself. There’s plenty of memorable scenery and photo opportunities along the way.
